Holli Snyder has always exercised, but maintaining an ideal weight was a challenge. Until now. Slim for Survival gave her the tools to reach her weight goal – and stay there. Slim for Survival is a new weight-loss program just for cancer survivors.
“We created Slim for Survival because we recognized there weren’t resources for patients who needed to lose weight,” says Renea Nilsson, program coordinator.
Slim for Survival incorporates nutrition education, physical activity and behavior modification support. A group of up to 10 cancer survivors attend four weekend retreats. They are run by Vail Health nutritionists, social workers and exercise physiologists.
“Our goal is to help people learn and practice new skills. And interrupt unhealthy patterns so they can lose weight and sustain healthy lifestyles,” Nilsson says.
The 16 people who have attended a Slim for Survival session lost an average of 14.7 pounds. And reduced their BMI by nearly 7 percent.
“Slim for Survival is amazing,” Snyder says. “I couldn’t have succeeded without the support of the staff and my fellow participants.”
